What is Osteotomy (Bowleg Surgery) ? In Which Situations Is Osteotomy (Bowleg Surgery) Performed?

Osteotomy surgery is a surgical intervention performed to correct the natural alignment of the legs and restore their normal functions. This surgery is performed using different techniques depending on the age of the patient, the severity and cause of the deformity.

Surgery may be necessary to treat severe pain, instability, walking problems, and other complications caused by bowlegs. Additionally, aesthetic concerns or other factors affecting quality of life may also influence the decision for surgery.

Bowleg are generally characterized by the knees curving more inwards (varus) or outwards (valgus) than normal. Legs that curve inward are called bowlegs, while legs that curve outward are called knock-knees. Osteotomy is generally considered by the specialist doctors of our clinic in patients with severe or progressive bow leg deformity or in cases that do not respond to conservative treatments. Osteotomy can be performed with different techniques depending on the patient’s age, health status, bow leg severity and symptoms.

  • Osteotomy: Osteotomy is the process of cutting and realigning bone. This procedure is used to restore correct alignment of the kneecap or femur to correct a bowleg deformity. Different osteotomy techniques can be applied depending on the type and severity of the bowleg deformity. Osteotomies are also referred to as joint-preserving surgery. It is done to balance the load carried by the hip and ankle joints, especially the knee joint.
  • Joint Prosthesis Implantation: In cases of bowleg deformities resulting from severe osteoarthritis or joint damage, knee or hip joint prosthesis implantation may be considered. This procedure is performed by removing damaged tissues in the joint and replacing them with artificial joint prostheses. In this way, pain and deformity in the joint are relieved and the patient’s functional capacity is increased. This procedure is performed on patients with both deformity and advanced joint calcification.
  • Joint Correction Operations: In some cases, bow leg deformity may occur due to abnormal growth or weakening of the ligaments or tissues in the joint. In these cases, joint correction operations may be required. These operations aim to provide correct alignment by correcting structural problems in the joint. These Operations are aimed at meniscus repair, anterior-posterior cruciate ligament surgeries or the treatment of cartilage pathologies within the joint.
  • Fixation Devices: Fixation devices can also be used to correct bow leg deformities. These devices are used to ensure proper alignment of bones and promote healing after ste Operation. Fixation devices can be used to fix and stabilize bones, especially after the osteotomy procedures.

As MSM Clinic, we aim to offer the most appropriate treatment options to our patients’ individual needs and conditions, with a team of experts in the treatment of bowleg deformities. In cases requiring surgery, we support our patients for a healthy and functional life by applying the safest and most effective surgical techniques.

What are the Symptoms of Bowlegs and Complaints of Patients?

Bow legs are generally characterized by the knees curving more inwards (varus) or outwards (valgus) than normal. In the varus type, the knees bend towards each other, while in the valgus type, the knees move away from each other. Bowlegs can often be congenital or develop with age. However, bow legs can also occur as a result of other health problems, such as bone deformities, cartilage damage, or joint problems. Symptoms and complaints of bow legs may vary from person to person, but generally include:

  • A significant gap or closeness between the knees (depending on the type of varus or valgus).
  •  Pain or discomfort in the knees, especially after prolonged standing or walking.
  •  Feeling of looseness or instability in the knees.
  • Joint pain or cartilage damage that may occur as a result of excessive wear of the kneecap or other structures under it.
  • In cases of excessively spread legs, restriction or difficulty in normal movements of the legs.
  • Cosmetic visual disturbance.
  • Stuck, jumping and edema due to intra-knee soft tissue injuries.

What is the Bowleg Surgery (Osteotomy) Recovery Process?

The recovery process after bowleg surgery is of great importance to us. As MSM Clinic, we aim to manage your post-operative process in the most comfortable and effective way. Although the recovery process after bow leg surgery varies for each patient, it is generally as follows:

  1. First Days After Surgery:

You may need to be under observation in the hospital for the first few days after the surgery. During this process, necessary precautions are taken to manage pain and prevent the risk of infection. It is important that you regularly use the medications recommended by our specialist doctor. The patient is discharged after ensuring the safety of the wound and providing the necessary training.

  1. Physical Therapy and Exercises:

After a certain period of time after the surgery, a physical therapy program can be started with our physiotherapist. This program may include muscle strengthening exercises, stretching and walking exercises. These exercises help strengthen the muscles and bring the leg into correct alignment. The FTR program starts on the first day after surgery.

  1. Movement and Cargo Restrictions:

Lifting heavy loads should be avoided for a certain period of time after surgery. Complying with the restrictions recommended by our MSM Clinic doctor will accelerate your recovery process. You may also need to use special supports or splints to keep your leg in the correct position. It varies depending on the method applied.

  1. Doctor Checks and Follow-up:

It is important to go to regular doctor check-ups after surgery. Our clinician will monitor your recovery and update the treatment plan as necessary. If you have any doubts or problems, do not hesitate to consult our specialist doctor.

As MSM Clinic, we are here to be with you and provide support during your post-operative recovery process. We prioritize your health above all else and strive to provide the best service. Whenever you have any questions or needs, feel free to contact us.
