Finger Fracture

What is a finger fracture and what types are there?

A finger fracture is a break or tear in the bone structure of the finger. It usually occurs as a result of trauma, sports injuries or accidents. Finger fractures can be classified in several ways:

  • Simple fracture: The bone is broken without fragmentation and the skin integrity is preserved.
  • Comminuted fracture: The bone breaks into more than one piece.
  • Open fracture: Broken bone ends protrude from the skin.
  • Closed fracture: The broken bone remains under the skin and is not visible from the outside.
  • Intra-articular fracture: The fracture affects the joint surface and occurs within the joint.
  • Avulsion fracture: This is the breakage of a bone fragment as a result of pulling on a tendon or ligament.

The treatment and healing process of each type of finger fracture can vary. As an MSM clinic, our goal is to provide the fastest and most effective recovery process with correct diagnosis and treatment.

What are the symptoms of a finger fracture?

Finger fractures often present with the following symptoms:

  • Pain: Immediately after the fracture, severe pain is felt, which worsens when the finger is moved.
  • Swelling: Swelling occurs quickly in the fracture area.
  • Bruising: Bruising may occur in the fracture area after an injury.
  • Tenderness: Tenderness and pain are felt when touching the broken area.
  • Deformation: The finger may lose its normal shape and bend.
  • Restricted movement: Moving the broken finger may be difficult and painful.
  • Cracking sound: A cracking sound may be heard when moving the finger during or after the fracture.

If you experience one or more of these symptoms, we recommend that you contact our experts as soon as possible. Early diagnosis and treatment speeds up the recovery process and reduces the risk of complications.

How is a finger fracture diagnosed?

Correctly diagnosing a finger fracture is crucial to developing an appropriate treatment plan. At MSM Clinic, our diagnostic process includes the following steps:

  • Physical examination: Your doctor will assess pain, swelling, bruising and loss of motion in your finger. This examination will examine your finger for deformities and tender spots.
  • Radiography (X-ray): An X-ray will be taken to determine the location and type of fracture. The X-ray will provide a detailed image of the bones and provide information about the size, shape and severity of the fracture.
  • Advanced imaging: In some cases, advanced imaging techniques such as CT (computed tomography) or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) may be used to assess the fracture in more detail. These techniques are particularly useful in complex cases such as intra-articular fractures or soft tissue injuries.

As an MSM clinic, our goal is to provide accurate and rapid diagnosis by using the most advanced technological equipment and methods in the diagnostic process.

How is a finger fracture treated? What types of treatment are there?

The aim of finger fracture treatment is to ensure that the bones heal in the correct position and to restore the functionality of the finger. Treatment options include:

  • Conservative treatment: For small and stable fractures, conservative treatment is usually sufficient. These treatment methods include splinting, plaster or splinting. The broken area is immobilized and the bones can heal in the correct position.
  • Closed reduction and immobilization: This involves manually correcting the fracture ends and then fixing them with a plaster cast or splint. It is usually performed under local anesthesia.
  • Surgical treatment: For more serious fractures or comminuted fractures, surgery may be necessary. Surgical treatment involves stabilizing broken bone fragments using implants such as plates, screws or wires. This method ensures that the bones fuse in the correct position and speeds up the healing process.
  • Physiotherapy: Physiotherapy is recommended to restore the mobility and strength of the finger after treatment. Special exercise programs increase the functionality of the finger.

As an MSM clinic, we carefully assess the condition of each patient, determine the most appropriate treatment method and support you throughout the treatment process. Our goal is to help you get well again as quickly as possible.

How long does it take and how does it heal for a finger fracture?

The healing time and healing process for a finger fracture vary depending on the type of fracture, severity and treatment method used. In general, the healing process is as follows:

  • Healing time: Simple finger fractures usually heal within 4-6 weeks. However, more severe or comminuted fractures may take longer to heal, up to 8-12 weeks.
  • Treatment process:

o Immobilization: The finger is immobilized with a cast, splint or brace to allow the broken bones to heal in the correct position. This usually takes 4-6 weeks.

o Surgical intervention: In cases that require surgical treatment, the post-operative recovery time may vary. After a surgical intervention, it is important for the patient to protect the surgical area for a period of time and to care for it according to the recommendations of their doctor.

o Physiotherapy: As part of the treatment, physiotherapy is used to restore the mobility and strength of the finger. This process begins after the fracture heals and can take several weeks.

o Follow-up examinations: Regular follow-up examinations are performed to monitor the healing process. These examinations assess whether the healing process is proceeding correctly and update the treatment plan if necessary.

As an MSM clinic, we closely monitor the recovery process of each of our patients and provide the necessary support to help them get well as quickly as possible. Our goal is to help our patients return to their daily lives as quickly and safely as possible.
