Foot Calluses

What are foot calluses?

Foot calluses are thickened layers of skin that appear on the skin of the feet and are usually seen on the soles, heels and palms. These hard blisters form in areas subject to stress and friction and can cause pain and discomfort over time.

Characteristics of calluses:

  • They consist of a hard and thick core.
  • They usually contain sharp nerve endings.
  • They can be painful and sensitive.
  • They can be triggered by the use of accessories such as shoes and socks.
  • They can be seen in different morphological forms.

What types of calluses are there on the foot?

  • Soft calluses: They are mostly seen between the toes and on the front of the sole of the foot. They look soft and white.
  • Hard calluses: They are mostly seen on the heels and on the back of the sole of the foot. They appear hard and yellowish.
  • Corns Calluses: They are round and narrow in shape. They can penetrate deep into the skin.
  • Pedunculated calluses: They are small and round in shape. They appear around the toes.

Why do foot calluses form?

There are several factors that lead to calluses forming on the feet. Some of the most common causes that can lead to calluses forming on the feet include the following:

  • Shoes and socks: Wearing tight and shoes or socks is one of the most common causes of calluses on the feet.
  • Friction and pressure: Repeated friction and pressure of the feet can also lead to calluses forming on the feet.
  • Foot bone deformities: Deformations in the foot bone can cause excessive pressure in certain areas and lead to calluses forming on the foot.
  • Some health problems: Some health problems, such as diabetes, can cause nerve damage and contribute to calluses forming on the feet.

How to treat calluses on the foot?

Outpatient treatment for calluses varies depending on the type and severity of the callus. In mild cases, some simple methods can be used to treat calluses at home. In more difficult cases, medication or medical intervention may be required. Some health problems such as diabetes or poor circulation can promote the formation of calluses on the feet. Therefore, in such health problems, it is important to treat the underlying disease in addition to treating calluses.

Medical intervention:

  • Callus surgery: It is considered the fastest and most effective method. The root of the callus is surgically removed by a dermatologist under local anesthesia.
  • Drug treatment: Preferred for calluses that are not very deep. Ointments and plasters prescribed by the doctor help soften and peel off the callus on the foot.

Other methods:

  • Using pumice stone or callus file: They can be used to soften and peel off calluses on the feet.
  • Callus bands and pads: Can be used to protect calluses and relieve pain caused by pressure.
  • Herbal methods: Some herbal products can help soften foot calluses. However, since there is no scientific basis, it is not recommended as a sole treatment method.

What to keep in mind when treating foot calluses:

  • Be sure to consult a specialist for your foot callus problem.
  • Take the medications prescribed by our doctor regularly.
  • Do not try to cut or remove calluses on your feet by yourself.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and socks to prevent calluses.
  • Moisturize your feet regularly to prevent calluses from reappearing.
